Although his middle name is often misspelled as "Allen," it is actually "Allan" after this family. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died of tuberculosis when he was only two, so Poe was taken into the home of John Allan, a successful tobacco merchant in Richmond, Virginia. Edgar Allan Poe (Janu– October 7, 1849) was born to a Scots-Irish family in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and actor David Poe, Jr. His exact burial location is also a source of controversy. Poe died at the age of 40, the cause of his death a final mystery. He is also often credited with inventing the gothic fiction story. He is best known for his Tales of the macabre and his Poems, as well as being one of the early practitioners of the short story and a progenitor of detective fiction, as well as crime fiction in the United States. Edgar Allan Poe was an American poet, short story writer, editor and critic and one of the leaders of the American Romantics.
